You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16)
Note! Jesus desires all believers to show their Christian identity.
Question! What are the Christian identity Jesus desires us to show?
Jesus uses 2 important elements of Christian identity we must show.
I. Believers are the SALT of the earth (vs 13).
1. Salt PREVENTS decay – “But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” (2 Timothy 4:5 NIV) – let’s evangelize to save the lost from spiritual decay.
2. Salt heals wounds – counsel people in their problems.
3. Salt PROVIDES flavour -“Season all your grain offerings with salt. Do not leave the salt of the covenant of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings.” (Leviticus 2:13 NIV)
4. Salt PROMOTES thirsty – “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matt 5:6)
II. Believers are the LIGHT of the world (vs 14).
1. Light DESTROYS darkness – “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:8-10 NIV)
